5-Stand Sporting Clays, or simply 5-Stand, is a relatively new shotgun game which debuted at AGAC in April of 2019. 5-Stand is only offered at scheduled shoots with Range Safety Officers present. Shoots are scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Thursdays and 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. Winter hours are in effect October through April and shoots begin at 1:00 pm. Summer hours are in effect May through September Thursday shooting hours begin at 11:00 am while Sunday shooting hours begin at 1:00 pm. The cost is $15 per round which includes ammo appropriate for our range. We currently offer 12 gauge and 20 gauge ammo. We may offer additional gauges as interest in the sport increases.
5-Stand is similar to traditional sporting clays, offering shots at targets from a multitude of angles and distances, but does so by placing five shooting stations side-by-side, only a few feet apart.
The advantages of five stand from AGAC’s viewpoint, is that a much smaller parcel of ground is required as compared to sporting clays. Therefore, 5-Stand shooting does not shut down any other part of the range. Also, only 6 to 8 target machines are needed to throw targets for all five shooting stations. AGAC has 8 target machines.
For the shooter, there are several advantages to 5-Stand as compared to sporting clays. As mentioned, a round takes only one box of shells, so the cost of shooting is less. And you can shoot a round of 5-Stand quickly, usually in only about half an hour’s time even with a full squad of five shooters.
A typical round of 5-Stand involves shooting five targets at all five shooting stations, requiring a box of 25 shells to complete the round. Usually, a single target is thrown from each shooting station, followed by two pairs of targets. The pairs may be thrown on-report, as a following-pair, or as a true-pair. On-report means that a second target is thrown as soon as you fire at the first target; in other words, on report of the gun. A following-pair means a second target is thrown automatically a few seconds after the first. And with a true-pair both targets are thrown simultaneously.
